How to smut - The Bare Bones.
So it’s that time - you and your partner are getting hot and heavy but where to from here? Maybe you’ve never written smut before, or maybe you’re just feeling awkward about it this time. Maybe you’re a narwhal and don’t know how to romance a woman - in which case I’ll ask how you manage to work a computer in the deep blue sea… Either way, hopefully this will help.
In this first section, I’m going to go over the bare bones of writing smut. The build up, the undressing, the foreplay, the main event - but all in the most simplistic of ways. This is going to have… crude language, references to naughty bits and the word nipple…
Read more at your own discretion.
Firstly, I’m going to write most of this from a straight male perspective. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t carry over to any relationship.
Now, once you’re at the point that your characters start getting to the part that they really get to know each other - you know, in the biblical sense; you have to start somewhere, right? But you might be nervous, or it might be awkward - you might not know what direction you want to take it. Let the characters take over, don’t be timid about it because there is NOTHING to worry about. Sex is a natural thing, your characters are going to do it (maybe) - if you’re too uncomfortable there is such a thing as a cut scene: when the clothes come off, the lights go off - the curtains close and everyone assumes what happened behind them without reading the dirty.
For writing sample purposes, I’ll be using a non existent male who I shall call Benjamin.
Alright let’s break this bitch like a kit kat.
- The Build Up
- The Strip Down
- The Foreplay
- The Main Event
- The… Well, You Know… Orgasm
- The Aftermath
The Build Up
So, there you are in the heat of the moment, getting all touchy feeling and pg-13 with your characters. Started with a kiss suddenly it’s turning into more. Maybe there’s some Barry White playing in the background - maybe it’s Rihanna. Who knows, who cares, the only things that matter are the two characters and the annoying fact there are still clothes between them. The surroundings blur out - the sounds fade into the background. Enjoy those gentle touches, savor the heat of her hand grazing across your chin.
The build up should never be rushed - that’s a huge problem with most smut roleplaying. The build up is completely forgone. Of course, if you’re writing smut for the sake of smut you might not care about the emotional side to it all, so you probably don’t need to read through this. However if you’re writing smut because it’s for your characters development, plot and/or ship - well, then read on young ones, read on.
The build up is important - if not more important than the sex itself. Think about it, everything is overly emotional, everything is new, everything is exciting. A lot of people negate this part of it, because they don’t think it plays a big part. But oh mama it does. Write about what your character is thinking, feeling, wanting - maybe he’s scared to let the girl he loves explore his body for the first time. Maybe he’s just plain excited that he finally got the head cheerleader into bed. No matter what the situation, your boy is thinking with both heads. He may be sexually focused, but there are a flurry of emotions going on while his hands are dragging along the silky fabric of his girls tank top.
Girls, chances are your emotions are just as strong as the boys - if not stronger. Come on, the way his hands are holding your jaw, the brush of his nose along your neck. It makes you feel something mentally as well as physically. Don’t forget about the small stuff.
Sure, you could write “He kissed her roughly, bringing a hand up under her shirt to gently cup her breast, tugging at the fabric.” and it’s great, tells the physical story - but, bring some just a small bit of emotional flourishing into it, and it gives the reader a better look into your characters mind. “Fervently he kissed her, bringing a shaking hand up under her shirt to tenderly cup her breast, tugging anxiously at the fabric.” And if you really want to show the mind over body - because internal is JUST as important as external. “A nervous huff passed his lips as they pressed eagerly to the girls - this was it, this was the moment he’d waited for. Fumbling hands struggled to slide under her shirt, stumbling their way to her bra to cup her breast gently.”
The first tells you he kissed her and touched her tit… Whoop de fucking do. The second tells you a bit of how he felt while he was doing it - nervous, but determined and clearly eager. The third looks a little more into it. He’s nervous, he’s scared - but he’s happy and excited. Clearly she means more than a one night stand. BUT that can go any way, it doesn’t have to be sappy emotions.
“His hands pressed under her shirt, quick to rest to her breasts while impatient lips took over the girls own. His movements lacked any sort of delicate nature, as he had little concern for being romantic…”
So, with the build up just remember - take it slow, don’t forget to use a little emotion and don’t rush or you’ll end up feeling unsatisfied. Well your character will…
The Strip Down
For something so important, it’s strange how many times I’ve seen this overlooked. Honestly, I’ve witnessed people completely disregard the fact that two seconds ago their characters were wearing clothes and now magically they’re on the bed and having intense sex. I don’t understand how that works, if someone would draw me a diagram maybe? Because unless you’re a wizard - if you completely ignore the fact there are clothes (or your character just walks naked everywhere they go, assuming the other party does to) then you’re either: Laying on the bed grinding vigorously against another clothed body - likely a dead one, assuming that you’re actually having some form of penetrative sex. Or, you’re doing a very ninja-like maneuver I can only call the zip and dip - in which you’re still fully clothed, but you’re… Well I think zip and dip kind of covered that.
Personally, I think this is one of the best parts of smut. Emotions blurred, heart racing, hands fumbling and grabbing at whatever piece of clothing is closest. C'mon, there’s a lot of stuff to work with, and people just breeze over it with a simple. “He took off her clothes and laid her on the bed.” In which case, I assume - as I said earlier… Maybe you’re a narwhal and don’t know how to romance a woman. For shame narwhal, for shame.
But fret not, all hope is not lost!
This part I can keep kind of short, honestly - because there isn’t much to say here. The principal is simple… Write out the shedding of your clothes. BAM! Not too hard to do… But the Narwhal asks how, and what kind of stripping is appropriate for what kind of para.
Slow and Sweet - Anything meant to be romantic? Well, take your time. “Ben shivered at her fingers sliding up his bare back "you’re beautiful…” a hand came up to press to her cheek gently before dropping to the hem of her shirt. For a few moments he stood idly, fiddling with the fabric; clearly a bit nervous… When the feeling subsided his other hand dropped, both sliding along her torso, helping to draw the shirt up to her arms and slowly over her head.“ Have your character fumble around a little, play with the buttons of her shirt (or you know… his), thumb at the soft fabrics, hook a finger into their shirt and drag it slowly up her body. That being said you can always be taking off your own clothes in the same fashion. Take your time, and don’t forget the socks. No one wants to have sex with socks on, it’s just really awkward.
Fast and Rough - Anything down and dirty? Just want to get to the good bits? Go for it, speed things up and rip things off. In this case you might not take off all the clothes - in this case the zip and dip might come in handy. However, you still have to move clothes out of your way for that case. One way or the other, the clothes need to go, and they need to go fast. ”A low throaty growl rolled up from Ben’s chest and parted his lips as they abused the flesh of Cassandra’s neck. He’d wanted this for so long - he’d wanted her for so long, and now he wasn’t going to wait another moment. Impatient hands gripped at the girls legs, tugging her up and pinning her to the wall before moving to tug at whatever undergarments she was wearing. He made quick work of drawing them down her legs and tossing them aside - and even quicker work of dropping his own pants to the ground.“
The Tease - Taking your time to make your characters partner beg for it? Of course there are a few things you can do here, the strip tease - which I’m not going to demonstrate… But in short, take your own clothes off slowly and sensually, tease your sweetheart a little with the temptation. Then, there’s the partner strip - which basically takes the mode of sweet and sensual, where you’re taking it slow. But the mindset of rough, where you want it so fucking bad you kinda wanna rip that shit off. However you will not, narwhal… ”Ben smiled wickedly, laying Cass on the bed and hovering above her. Rough fingertips dug into the dips of her hipbones, helping to pull her body close to his for just a moment. The man let out a soft huff of air while leaning down and pressing his lips to her exposed stomach, his hand gripping at the hem of her shirt and dragging it slowly upward - a heated trail of kisses following closely.“ Again, you may be ripping your own suit off, of course.
The Derp - The awkward and somehow endearing moments of the strip down. This is usually reserved for unlikely sexual encounters, virgins or just… really nervous people. Basically you can take any of those methods, just make sure to make it as awkward as humanly possible. Ben for instance is one of those guys, and I assume most of his strip downs would be the derp and look something like this. ”A small, exasperated huff left his lips as his hands struggled to tug the shirt over his own head. “Why can’t I…” he growled, wriggling around and eventually dropping his arms to his side in defeat - shirt still resting over his face. “I’m sorry.” he mumbled after struggling with the black fabric. Of course, she thought it was cute… The hands on his chest made every one of his hairs stand up on end, the trace of her fingertips - the feeling of them popping the button of his shirt open. “Thanks.” he brought a hand up to rub the back of his head, smiling down at his perfect little princess.“ Awkward, and yet adorable.
Or, by all means. Continue to wizard, Harry.
The Foreplay
I feel like this is going to be my shortest bit - only because I’ll be posting very specific Foreplay How-to’s in future. For now, you’ll take what I give you and you’ll god damn like it.
Foreplay! So, once you’ve taken care of building up and stripping down, now before your happy ass just goes ahead and porks your lady you really need to actually turn her on. It’s kind of imperative. Of course in some cases this step is completely forgone because of the simple intensity of everything that led up to being naked. You might not have time for foreplay, I don’t know - what if there are aliens invading and you just really wanna have sex one last time. In that case, by all means skip this.
However, if your going to slow and sweet, or even the rough stuff… Somewhere in between? Foreplay is a great place to start. As I said with the build up, you need to make sure to lace a few emotions in, however during foreplay they’re usually a lot more clouded and you’re thinking a lot more sexually than emotionally. Nervous feelings will more than likely still be very apparent, but once that blowjob starts. Boys, stop saying he’s nervous because there is a mouth on his dick. And all he’s thinking is "Holy fucking shit how does she do that.” and/or “Did I leave the stove on?”. Hopefully not the latter….
Right foreplay is pretty straightforward, it’s basically your time to make your girl stop wanting you, and start needing you. That, or give your guy some seriously blue balls before you tend to them. Oral, hand jobs, playful touching, body exploration, grinding, playing with feathers or ice. It’s all foreplay. Your goal is basically to turn your partner on to the point that they’re begging for you to take them.
Just try and remember that it’s foreplay, not the main event. Unless it is, but that’ll be a different how to. Now this is a little one sided honestly, because if you’re a man and you’re pleasing a woman - buddy, the more orgasms you give her, the better. So finish her off with your hands, your mouth and then move to the sex. She’ll be insanely wet, and overly sensitive. If you’re a girl pleasing a guy, your job is actually a little different - turn the guy on, suck ‘em a little, use your hands… But don’t finish him off, because then he’ll be going to get a beer and you’ll be laying there kind of annoyed. It takes a little time in most cases for men to be able to… Well. Hey sometimes it doesn’t, and since it’s technically fictional writing your guy could go again and again forever. But in most realistic cases, after the first orgasm it’s hard to have another any time soon - so don’t drain your boy just then. Feel free to mix and match there, but the basis are the same.
Get a guy hot and bothered, get a girl off.
The Main Event
So you’re finally there. You can get down and dirty. And I’m actually not going to go into too much detail here. I don’t need to tell you the slang words for a penis, I don’t need to give you a specifics on positions. Google, enough said. What I am going to go over is: virgin sex, rough sex, romantic sex, awkward sex, the emotions.
Virgin Sex - this is the absolute most annoying thing in a roleplay, because half the women that write it act like they’re being torn in half and the other half apparently don’t feel any pain. Virgin sex for men isn’t quite the same, but it annoys me just as much because apparently every single man knows how to fuck like a porn star. If you’re two virgins, I hate it even more because ninety percent of the time I see para’s done with two virgins… I want to punch people in the cunts.
KEEP IN MIND AS A VIRGIN WOMAN: As a woman, if you’re a virgin, yes it’s going to hurt. It’s not going to feel like you’re being ripped in half by an alien unless he’s twelve inches and the thickness of a soda can. If you’re a virgin, you’re going to have some bleeding, end of story - there’s no way around that. It’s going to be uncomfortable, and it might be for the entire time. Might feel a little good at times, but it’s not going to be the mind-blowing sex you’ll have eventually. Chances are, as a virgin you’re not going to have an orgasm. Sorry girls in most cases it’s just not a good enough feeling to make that happen.
KEEP IN MIND AS A VIRGIN MALE: You’ve never fucked before, you’re not James Deen - you’re going to fumble… You’re going to feel awkward. It’s not like having sex with your hand, it’s a fucking body that’s under you. Stop having it be perfect, stab her in the leg, flick her in the eye, I don’t know do something… Virgin sex is not clean cut.
KEEP IN MIND AS TWO VIRGINS: ONE, both above. TWO, if you’re a male, taking a females virginity - I don’t care how much lube you have (you need lube…) you’re not just going to slide in there like a warm bowl of soup okay. It’s going to be tight, it might hurt YOU a little, and you need to go slow. You can’t just stick it in and go to town unless you want to really hurt her. In which case, I assume you’re a rapist or a psychopath. If you’re a man, taking a womans v-card, be gentle… Take your time and ease yourself into her. Note that there will be a bit of resistance, there will be a bit of uncomfortableness for the both of you.
Rough Sex - If you’re going to be going at it - really going at it, you’re probably not virgins so the above doesn’t hold true to any of this. However if the girl is tight the whole resistance and lube thing is still pretty much a carry-through. I digress. Rough sex is simple. You’re getting down and dirty, it doesn’t matter how messy and sloppy it is.
There isn’t much to say here to be perfectly honest. We all know how a boys parts fit into a girls part. I don’t need to teach you how to thrust your hips, guys and if I do we have a bigger problem than smut.
Rough sex is primitive, fast paced and hard. Generally it’s going to hurt a little, but the pleasure should outweigh that - since it’s kind of the point. Think about the scene your in. For instance, let’s say that it’s the aforementioned moment between Benjamin and the girl in the alley. That would lead up to some seriously rough sex right there. With rough sex there is lots of grabbing, heavy breathing, panting, moaning, screaming, clawing, biting…. I think you get the picture here. Girls, hold your men! Grip those shoulders, claw his back - ride him so hard he has bruises. Fellas, bend the lady over and take a handful of hair, rest your hand to the small of her back. There are ENDLESS ways to have rough sex.
But the easiest way I can sum it it? It’s sex, and it’s rough. Leave marks, leave each other sore.
Romantic Sex - This seems to be the most widely used form of sex in roleplays - even if the characters are not romantically involved. It’s just the more sensual slow side, rather than the rough cowboy fucking. With romantic sex, you’ll probably want to stick to missionary or cowgirl. You want to be facing, you want to be able to kiss. If you’re a guy and you’re on top, bring a hand down around her, hold her close, nuzzle into her neck and kiss her lovingly. If you’re a girl and you’re on top, do the same thing. Lean over and kiss him, rest your forehead to his.
This is pretty straightforward, honestly. Gentle, sensual, romantic and sweet. Soft moans, heated breaths, shallow huffs of air, whispers of your lovers name and loving gazes. Slow movements, gentle grips.
I’ll note - if you’re doing romantic sex, please please please please please make sure to address INWARD EMOTIONS as well as the actions. Which I’ll address later.
Awkward Sex - Alright so I’m not going to have a lot to say here, because it goes with everything else. As above, it can be rough or sweet, just remember to throw in the awkward moments here and there just like virgin sex, even if you’re not a virgin. Just fumble, lots of giggles I’m sure, mess up a few times, kiss the wrong places and bump noses. Emotions should be very very obvious in this way. Because if we’re not talking about conventionally awkward sex - we’re talking about sex you don’t really want to be having. Emotions…. Use them.
Emotions! - The fucking absolute most important part of writing any of this, and it’s going to be insanely short. Alright… I’ve said it a bunch of times already - you NEED to have the internal. Go through what your character is going through. Writing smut without emotion is just bad porn, but if you lace emotion into your paragraphs you’ll be building your character. If he’s nervous, or cocky, or shy, or excited. You need to weave it in. Most times during sex emotions are heightened, but they’re pretty specific. Unless you really don’t want to be having sex with your partner you’re probably not thinking about what’s on TV. It’s probably a set of two emotions, happiness and excitement, anger and lust, love and nervousness. Not those in that order - but if you’re angry and full of lust, you’re probably not sad and nervous…
You get the drift.

The… Well, You Know… Orgasm
This is going to be another short section, because the climax isn’t really a long, drawn out process. When you’ve both decided it’s time to fall over that edge - write it out a little. It’s a simple, if not the simplest thing to write. Even if you’ve never had an orgasm, the orgasm portion of your smut shouldn’t be that hard to manage.
Alright men, chances are you’ve had one and you know what it feels like. But it doesn’t feel the same for everyone. Some men describe it as the feeling of something building up in the pit of their stomachs for quite some time - some men say they don’t feel it until the last second. Either way, if you’re not a guy and you’re writing a guy. Here’s a few pointers. For one, the build up is what happens in most cases, a lot of times guys can feel themselves getting closer to that edge. So you do have time to warn a girl before you go all Vesuvius on her. Soon as it happens, I don’t care if you’re the hulk you’re going to get a bit weaker. It’s going to be hard to keep thrusting - not only because all your muscles are freaking the fuck out, but because you’re insanely sensitive and your still buried deep inside a girl that is probably (if you’re lucky) having her own orgasm and squeezing on your cock. It feels good, obviously, it makes your muscles tense, it makes your head swirl with happy feelings. Basically, it’s euphoric.
This basically applies to women as well. However, orgasms for girls are quite a bit different. There are two types - did you know that? Well one, the clitoral orgasm is the most common because a lot of girls can’t have (or just have never had) a vaginal orgasm. Alright so the first isn’t something you’re going to get with sex, so I’m just going to hop over that section and move right to the vaginal orgasm. It’s more intense, it’s something that’ll make your body shake, your muscles tense and your whole body just feel… Holy shit. Again, it’s euphoric. Keep in mind, if you’re having an orgasm you’re going to be clenching your muscles involuntarily, you’re going to feel sensitive. In some cases, girls can cum just as much (if not more) than a man can so don’t shy away from that either.
I’m not a doctor so I can’t get into the medical descriptions for you. But in short. Orgasms feel fucking fantastic, write them out.
The Aftermath
Like I said before, sex isn’t clean. You’re both sweaty, sticky and probably covered in cum. Don’t give me some magically clean bullshit. I don’t believe in that kind of wizardry. So, when you’re both spent and done with the whole orgasm thing you’re going to need to do something right? I’ve seen so many people just close off a para right there. Orgasm, fall down, done. No no - you do something. So do it. This is the time for those emotions to really flourish. This is the most critical part, character development wise, part of the smut.
Romantically, you’re probably going to curl up, maybe go take a shower. Go for that minor inner monolog about how happy you are with your girl. Tug her close and cuddle her into your arms, place loving kisses on her forehead and fall asleep. Tell her you love her, god dammit.
If you’re on the rougher side of things, you might go your separate ways, clean up and go back to what you’re doing. The aftermath fully depends on what type of sex you had, what your characters are to each other and what you want to gain from the event. There are countless ways that this can go, you can have a fight, you can lay down, you can just sit and talk. This isn’t something I can tell you how to do, because you and your partner need to work that one out.
You know your character, at least you should, and you know how they would react after a situation like sex. So have them react. Don’t just close the para and act like it never happened - it did… it fucking happened you were there…
Aftermath… Write that shit.
So in short: if you’re writing smut just to smut - keep it short and sweet, because character development and emotional experience probably doesn’t matter. However if this means anything to your character - in a good or bad way… take the time and add some internal emotions so it’s not just porn.
